Dorm-style living in San Francisco

This is a very interesting article from the NY Times that talks about a new housing trend within the urban core
toward ‘dorm’ style living.  This is pretty close to what you remember from college – a fairly small sleeping room with bathrooms down the hall as well as a shared kitchen and living room.   There are many people in San Francisco who are choosing this type of housing.  Keep in mind that the average rent for a 1 bedroom apartment in SF is $3,300 per month, so its a much-needed option where the range of choices goes from too expensive to waayyy too expensive!    If you read some of the comments you’ll see that many people have negative reactions to this housing trend, especially when they compare it to our traditional ‘american dream’ notions of the single-family detached home in the suburbs as the metric of success.   But these economic times are much different and there is a silver lining in this as well:    Many people today young and old are socially isolated and crave stronger connections with others.   Our new internet age has disconnected us more than ever and its taking a toll on our social fabric.   This dorm style housing, or cooperative housing, does help to bring people together, help us make stronger connections and live a more social lifestyle.
