Health Sciences Research Facility II

University of California at San Diego
La Jolla, California

Located within the School of Medicine Campus, this 196,000 sf research facility has been described as one of the most sophisticated new laboratory buildings of its kind. The building is  composed of a 5 story research lab block and a 7 story office block organized around a west-facing daylit atrium. The building forms an edge to a major campus green space and reinforces the existing  pedestrian circulation paths.

The building has been certified as LEED Platinum and features many state of the    art sustainable technologies such as computer-controlled exterior sunshades, optimized interior daylight  distribution, onsite stormwater treatment, and natural ventilation for private offices.

Winner of San Diego’s 2014 Grand Orchid Award,  jurors described the building in the following way:

“a sustainable  jewel box; rational, subtle, competent, pure, in the same vein as the Salk Institute.”

“It’s a beautiful building. I’m impressed; every detail is a pleasure to see.”

John’s role on the project was lead designer, and was responsible for all aspects of the buildings design including its interior planning, its exterior massing, proportions and material choices both inside and out.
