Headwaters, Portland, Oregon
Project Architect: Will Ullman
Architect of Record: Vallaster & Corl Architects
This modern 100 unit, market rate apartment building is part of a multi-family complex of buildings in southwest Portland. Headwaters & Village at Headwaters is an environmentally responsible development which replaced a decrepit building and acres of asphalt covering a natural creek. The developer selected this site for its adjacency to an existing environmental zone owned by Portland Public Parks, its proximity to a public transit station, and for the opportunity to repair the environmental errors of the previous development. The signature of this project is the restoration and daylighting of one of Portland's 200 buried creeks. This water quality effort will run the length of the site and beyond, meandering between the buildings, off-site through a traffic triangle, and ultimately into Tryon Creek. Sustainable strategies are incorporated within the building, including generous daylighting, naturally ventilated corridors, 'green' building materials, and energy efficient lighting, heating, and appliances.
