33rd & Division, Portland, Oregon

Project Architect:  Will Ullman
Architect of Record:  Works Architecture

This four-story mixed-use building sits along SE Division Street, where new construction has changed the scale and feel of the area. The building fits in well with this new urban context while also adding its own unique character.
The front of the building has a regular pattern of windows that gives it a clean, simple appearance, but inside and around the edges, the design becomes more playful, with shapes and materials that create interesting and varied spaces.  The building makes the most of its 8,000 square foot lot by using smart design to create more open and useful areas. Instead of a solid block, the structure includes open-air courtyards and gardens. These bring in natural light and fresh air, while also creating shared spaces for people to gather and connect.  In the end, this design turns a simple building into a small community—where open, shared spaces help organize the interior and bring a sense of life and light to the whole project.

Will Ullman served as the project architect on this building while employed with Works Architecture in Portland.  As the project architect, Will coordinated the work of all consultants and produced much of the architectural drawings which included exterior detailing for both performance and aesthetics.
